Food allergies and legislation

The prevalence of food allergies and the alarming trend of its increase amongst the general population, especially children, has fortunately not gone unnoticed by the authorities.

It has lead to new legislation in the EU and strict requirements for the labelling of all products clearly listing the contents of any allergens. This legislation is covered in EC Directive 89/2003 which contains a list of 14 allergens. See Table 2 below:
